Town of Mount Pleasant Leaders Set Sail, Visit Mediterranean Shipping Company

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (November 16, 2016) – The Town of Mount Pleasant’s Economic Development Committee hosted an outreach meeting Monday at Mediterranean Shipping Company’s (MSC) South Atlantic Headquarters on Watermark Boulevard.  MSC is currently ranked number one for market share in the United States and number two internationally for global container shipping.  Attendees included Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page, Economic Development Chairman Councilman Mark Smith, Mayor Pro Tempore Gary Santos, Councilman Elton Carrier, Councilman Jim Owens and Town staff.

“Mount Pleasant has a long history of maritime commerce.  However, the idea of a ‘Blue Economy,’ blue as in that of water, is an emerging focus in our Economic Development Strategy,” said Mayor Page.  “MSC is provides a great foundation as we continue to pursue developing this sector to include that of ‘Blue Tech’ alongside our traditional seafaring businesses.”

MSC boasts a fleet of 480 modern vessels with a combined 2.8 million TEU carrying capacity, serving 315 ports of call.  Overall, the company employees over 60,000 people internationally and is a major customer of the SC Ports Authority.  The Mount Pleasant office is home to many divisions not located elsewhere in the U.S. such as finance and is host to the company’s management training program – MSC University.

“We’re so proud Mediterranean Shipping continues to put their anchor down in Mount Pleasant,” said Town Economic Development Committee Chair, Councilman Mark Smith. “MSC is a wonderful economic development partner to the Town providing over 330 quality jobs in our community alone.”

The Business Outreach meeting series is designed to engage with local business leaders to better understand the challenges and opportunities they face to ensure Mount Pleasant remains unequivocally “Open for Business.”
