creek to table: From Shrimping to Dining
Shem Creek has long been the lifeblood of Mount Pleasant, evolving from a bustling shrimping village to a vibrant dining and recreational hub. Historically, Shem Creek was the center of the local seafood industry, where shrimp boats lined the docks, and the air was filled with the sounds of a hard day’s work. Today, while the shrimp boats still dot the horizon, Shem Creek has transformed into a lively area where visitors can enjoy waterfront dining, paddle boarding, and breathtaking sunsets.
It’s all in the name: Mount Pleasant
The question is often asked of how Mount Pleasant got its name. The charming village of Mount Pleasant was laid out by James Hibben in 1803 and took its name from one of the area’s eighteenth century plantations. The original Mount Pleasant plantation house, known today as the Hibben House, still stands in the Old Village – Mount Pleasant’s historic district.
