Old Sunken Hull
Visible from the Patriots Point shoreline and the Ravenel Bridge, the Old Sunken Hull is one of Mount Pleasant’s most curious hidden-in-plain-sight landmarks. The concrete remains in Charleston Harbor are from the Col. J.E. Sawyer, a World War I-era Army Quartermaster river steamer that was later decommissioned and sank near Adger’s Wharf in Charleston in 1926. After becoming a hazard for harbor traffic, the vessel was removed and towed to the Mount Pleasant side of the harbor in 1929, where it still rests today.
Often mistaken for a simple concrete platform or abandoned structure, the Old Sunken Hull adds another layer to Mount Pleasant’s maritime history and serves as a reminder of the working harbor, military history and coastal transportation routes that shaped the Lowcountry. Check out the Historical Markers about the Old Sunken Hull located at the Mount Pleasant Pier in Memorial Waterfront Park.
